Of course, the cellar was insanely cold and very dark. It had begun as a crawl space, but in the 1920s, when the economy picked up, people wanted more space for all the things they were buying. So they dug what came to be known in this area as a Michigan basement. The ceiling was low, maybe five feet. I had to duck slightly. A unique problem for my five feet, three inches. I’d never had to duck under a ceiling before in my life.

The floor was compressed dirt, hard and mostly level. There was a roughly ten by ten-foot area that allowed for the five-foot ceiling, which was actually the underside of the first floor. It was composed of exposed wires, pipes and rough hewn wood. The rest of the cellar had a type of shelf all around made of the original dirt. That was the original crawl space. A retainer wall kept that dirt from sliding down into the dug out part.

The crawl space extended far beyond the weak yellowish light from my flashlight. I assumed it went to the edges of the house, or at least close to the edge. It was a space I had zero interest in exploring.

“They have people for that,” I muttered.

My senses were tingling and I could feel the presence of one, maybe even two, spirits. I couldn’t see anything though, and no one was talking to me. I regretted letting Tawny leave and thought briefly about calling her to come straight back. They were probably still at the airport, waiting to board.

While I could see and talk to the spirits, she still had the better and stronger skills when it came to the unknown.

I thought back to the ghostly panel from the conference and the question-and-answer session. Someone had asked what the best way was to get a reluctant ghost to speak up. The answer was to be patient. The spirit who answered was an old woman wearing a buffalo checked dress and a bonnet. She told about being in a house that she loved until a very loud family showed up. She wasn’t violent or angry, so she simply disappeared into the attic and never let them know she was there.

Unfortunately, one night when she was floating around, one of the adults saw her. Of course, they panicked and the very next day, an exorcist showed up. She then corrected herself. No, it wasn’t an actual exorcist. But it was someone who was very much like those of us in the audience. She said she knew she was vulnerable. That she could not only be seen but also was feeling a great deal of pressure to talk. She couldn’t handle the exposure and sunk even further from communication.

Thankfully, the person who was trying to reach her was patient and kind. Much like Tawny’s mother, Orenda, she understood that most spirits just needed a little help, and she was willing to do whatever this spirit needed and wanted.

Eventually, after several days of her sitting around in the attic, the ghost felt comfortable and willing to talk.
